About Brazilian Dragon Eel ~24” (Muraena Pavonina)
The Brazilian Dragon Eel (Muraena pavonina) is a rare and striking saltwater moray eel known for its bold yellow rosette pattern over a dark brown to black body. With its muscular build and dragon-like head, this species develops into an impressive predator, reaching 30–36+ inches as an adult. Its vivid patterning becomes especially dramatic under reef lighting, making it a true centerpiece for large marine aquariums.
This carnivorous eel thrives on a meaty diet of shrimp, squid, clams, silversides, and other marine-based foods, ideally target-fed 2–3 times per week. Aggression level is moderate to high—while it typically ignores larger tankmates like tangs, triggers, and large angelfish, it will consume small fish and crustaceans. A minimum 125 gallon aquarium (240+ gallons preferred long term) with secure lid coverage and ample rockwork is required, as moray eels are powerful and notorious escape artists. Ideal for experienced aquarists seeking a rare, large predator eel for a saltwater fish-only or aggressive reef system.
